Youth Heritage Photo Contest
The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival (TBBHF), in collaboration with Verizon, Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, created the Heritage Photography Contest for at-risk middle s
chool students. It is the Board’s belief that photography, as an art medium, offers students an alternative means of expression as well as affording opportunities for the student to discover hidden talents and to build self esteem and confidence.
Members of the Board of the Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival have extended a partnership to the Hillsborough County School system to complement the existing curriculum with the photography competition. Students are supplied with cameras, given a theme to focus their photos on, a workshop is conducted, and photos are processed, developed and judged. Of the many photographs viewed, a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place photographs were selected. The winning students will receive US Savings Bonds and all students will receive prizes for participation. Exhibits of the photos are housed in the gallery of the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) for approximately four weeks. A Special Reception for the students and invited guest are held to recognize the winners, participates and their artwork.
The Tampa
Bay Black Heritage Festival, in 2007, partnered with Memorial Middle School to conduct its First Annual Youth Heritage Photo Contest and the winners were presented during the 2008 Festival. Memorial Middle School is an urban- inner city school with a student population of just over 1100. Racial and ethnic minorities comprise approximately 80% of student attendees.
In 2008 and 2009, TBBHF partnered with Van Buren Middle School who allowed all interested students to participate in the contest. Over 60 students received and returned cameras for judging.
The Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival, will partner with Sligh Middle School for 2011 and winners will be chosen for 2012. More details to come!
